« I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. » Proverbs 5. 13

« My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke » Proverbs 3. 11

The inability of the man to free himself from what is harmful to him we wonder. Many take pleasure in what destroys them. Smoking, alcohol, drugs, excesses of every kind … their misdeeds and their health consequences are known. But we do not want or cannot give up what is at first a pleasure and quickly becomes bondage. Often, any advice has no effect on the behaviors which results are devastating. Which is true in the physical realm is also true spiritually.

In doing wrong we are doing evil and we destroy ourselves. The stubborn inclinations of our nature, with our incapacity to free ourselves from them, are highlighted with the word of God. The prophet Jeremiah said: “but they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.” (Jeremiah 7. 24). The denial to listen to God, to turn to him to accept the delivery provides that leads to eternal death. God invites us to listen and simply receive what he said for our present and eternal happiness.

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11. 28)

“Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 10. 11)

“Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live” (Isaiah 55.3)
